GAMMA Support: Groups and Information Sources

Here are some links you may find useful in finding other resources. GAMMA NSW does not guarantee the accuracy of any of the information on any other sites.

Sydney Support Groups

Acceptance (Gay Catholic group)

Acceptance has been going over 30 years in Sydney. Its mission is to provide a safe, spIritual and social environment for Gay Catholics, their families and friends.
The website is www.gaycatholic.com.au. Currently there is a weekly mass at 8:00 PM at St Joseph's Catholic Church Newtown (Cnr Lennox and Bedford Sts) a short walk from Newtown Station or the Newtown bus stops for 422, 423, 426 or 428 buses. Parking adjacent to the church is usually not a problem. Acceptance also has home masses every couple of months.

AIDS Council of New South Wales

ACON is a Community based organisation that provides services for people living with and affected by the HIV epidemic in New South Wales.

Body Electric

For more than 20 years, The Body Electric in Australia has been, and continues to be, a unique resource for men seeking to be more comfortable in their bodies and for those looking to connect on deeper levels with others. The Body Electric's flagship weekend workshop, Celebrating the Body Electric, provides a physical, emotional and erotic start on the journey toward greater personal fulfillment.

Coming Out Australia

Coming Out Australia is a community focused website to provide information, resources and interactive activities for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people about "Coming Out." It is also for heterosexual people who are curious and want to understand more about coming out.

Freedom 2 B[e]

Historically Pentecostal and Charismatic churches have maintained the outdated belief that homosexuality is a sin, a choice or the result of a dysfunctional upbringing. This belief has caused untold torment and trauma for many trying to resolve their issues of faith and sexuality.
Whether you have left the church or are still there, Freedom 2 B[e] is a non judgemental, safe place to assist people on their journey to reconciliation.

GAY4PLAY

GAY4PLAY is breaking the monotony and giving Sydney the opportunity to go beyond the bars of Oxford Street and join in events such as the Gay Armada (luxury yacht cruising on Australia Day) and Chard... Champ... Camp... (the Hunter Valley wine tour).

Gay Dads NSW

The Gay Dads NSW group aims to provide information, support and social activities for gay dads and those contemplating fatherhood.

Harbour City Bears

Harbour City Bears is an inclusive not-for-profit community group for hairy gay men, their admirers and friends.

Mature Age Gays (MAG)

MAG is committed to the health and welfare of the mature age Gay men. We have no political or religious affiliations. Our organisation is linked to ACON, the AIDS Council of NSW.

ozmarriedgays

This online community is a mutual support group for same gender attracted people (lesbian, gay or bisexual) who are or have been married (in a heterosexual marriage). It is primarily aimed at residents of Australia and New Zealand. However, all are welcome.

Points of Difference

Points Of Difference Events Pty Ltd provides hosted entertainment and travel solutions to the Gay and Lesbian community, and their friends.

PFLAG

PFLAG stands for Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays, a non-profit voluntary organisation whose members have a common goal of keeping families together. PFLAG is here to give help, support and information to families, friends of all gay people.

Southern Cross Outdoors Group (SCOG)

Chiefly known for bushwalking, SCOG also sponsors an annual week in the snow, some social events outside Sydney, historical walks and twice-weekly tennis. The members point out that they do not have the "hacking-through-the-undergrowth" ethos often associated with bushwalkers. Their site is informative and gives a grading to every one of their walks with the parameters of each grade explained.

Team Sydney

Team Sydney upholds the need for sport, fitness and healthy lifestyles within the GLBT community.

If you are under 26 and identify as transgender, intersex or gender-queer or are simply exploring what gender means for you, twenty10 can help you access the support and information you may need. If you are a parent or a support worker twenty10 hopes you find in their site the information you need.

Regional Support Groups

 

Because GAMMA has finite resources, its reach outside the Sydney area is limited.

We try to keep this section up to date, but some groups may no longer be in existence. Descriptions below have been taken directly from those provided by groups that have a site, but some can only afford an email or phone contact. Sydney groups or ACON will usually do their best to find you someone in your area. Community newspaper, The Sydney Star Observer (see below) has a community contacts section which is updated regularly. The Star Observer is available either as a weekly newspaper that can be mail delivered or viewed online at www.ssonet.com.au.

Coastal Lynx (Mid - North Coast Region)

A Gay and Lesbian social group on the holiday coast of NSW. Over 500 members enjoying dances, parties and special events.

Rainbow Visions Hunter (Newcastle Region)

Social Group for Gay, Bisexual and lesbian activities. A full listing of happenings on the website. Rainbow Visions Hunter aims to enhance the health, well-being and social life of Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender, intersex and queer people in the Newcastle and Hunter Region. Rainbow Visions is working to build community among Gays, lesbians, and transgender people in the Hunter. We began in 2001 and were incorporated as an association in 2002. The Rainbow Visions web site is, and will continue to be, the best and first place for locals and visitors to access up to date information on services and goods for Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.

Tropical Fruits Social Group (Northern Rivers Region)

Tropical Fruits Inc, established in 1988, is the Premier Gay and Lesbian Social Group of the Northern Rivers in NSW. It is a not for profit, incorporated association that holds regular events for its diverse members and guests.

The FRUIT BOWL is the home of Tropical Fruits. Opened in November 2004, it has rapidly become a hub of activity. It provides a place to meet friends, get involved or drop by for a cuppa.
